Hikari Okubo triumphs at first Dubai Electric Scooter Cup
Japan’s Hikari Okubo, competing for Kris Fade’s ‘Fade Fit’ team, took victory at the inaugural Dubai Electric Scooter Cup. This landmark event, the first of its kind in the Middle East, was organized by the Federation of Micromobility and Sports along with the Dubai Sports Council.
The Dubai Design District was transformed into a thrilling race circuit where spectators watched 16 top riders of both genders compete in a knockout format. This exciting new sport brought an exceptional level of entertainment to the audience, enriching Dubai's Year of Sustainability.
Participants from diverse global backgrounds joined the six competing teams. Riders hailed from the USA, UK, India, South Africa, Estonia, Japan, Spain, Ireland, Switzerland, and Italy, making the event a truly international affair.
The semi-finals were charged with fierce competition, making it challenging to predict the six finalists. The first semi-final saw Okubo advance alongside Frenchman Kilian Larher of XPRS and India's Anish Shetty from Booz Racing. The second semi-final resulted in qualifications for Swiss rider Matis Nayroud of the Supercar Blondie team, Spaniard Marc Luna from Kota Racing, and Frenchman Aymard Vernay from the 258 Racing team.
In a tightly contested final, Okubo overtook Shetty after a few initial laps, steadily increasing his lead and leaving Shetty to fend off Neyroud, who ultimately secured third place. Reflecting on his victory, Okubo shared, “This was my first foray into this type of racing, but the unique atmosphere and the thrill of the track in Dubai made it a memorable experience. I'm grateful to the International Federation and the organizers for this opportunity, and I’m eager to return for the next edition to defend my title and enjoy another electric scooter adventure.”
